...even if it's the right thing to do. Last week we said goodbye to a dear member of our family. Sage was 12 years old and suffering from many ailments that made life quite miserable. After much debate and the vet's recommendation we decided to end her suffering and put her down.
8 years ago Claudia told me about co-workers daughter who had a 4 year old boxer they were trying to find a home for. We were thinking Nellie needed a companion, so Claudia told me the couple were coming over so we could "meet" Sage. Immediately upon arrival Sage's owners pull out her dish and a half full bag of dog food. Apparently this was more than a meet and greet, more like dropping her off for good. That first night I worked on some simple commands with Sage rewarding her with treats. As she sat patiently I couldn't stop laughing as she sat there with this huge under bite and one lower K9 tooth poking out. It turns out Boxers are one of the best breed of dogs, in our opinion. Sage was always really patient with the kids and very gentle with them. They aren't the most graceful dogs as is demonstrated by the "legs everywhere run" they all seem to have. Sage was a trooper, going on long hikes, even at 11 years old, although she did get carried a few times.
So glad that her pain is over and she's in a better place. Here's to great companions! Thanks Sage.
